Protect Your HQ While Traveling
Even superheroes take time out to visit family during the holidays. This season, more than 100 million Americans will head out of town each year.* If you’re traveling in the next couple of months, use these tips to keep your home base safe, so it’ll be in tip-top shape when you return.
Get A Timer
Set a few lights on a timer so that they turn on and off at different times and in different rooms around the house. Have a smart plug or smart bulbs? Use your smartphone to set a timer and then monitor its schedule while you are away.
Install A Motion-Activated Outdoor Light
Keep your home well-lit to protect it against unwanted critters or visitors.
Unplug Electronics
Decrease your electric bill and prevent accidental surges when no one is home by unplugging electronics. This includes not only the big appliances like your TV and microwave, but smaller ones too, like a coffee maker, extra phone charger and digital clock.
Turn off the Water Supply
For longer trips, turn off the water before you go so you’re not welcomed home with a big flood.
Clean Out the Kitchen
Don’t let the expired (or borderline expired) food items stick around. Do a quick clean of the kitchen and pantry before you leave, so no unwelcome bugs or smalls appear when you’re gone.
Set the Thermostat
In the winter, keep your thermostat set to at least 50 degrees while you’re away to prevent freezing pipes.
Freeze Your Mail
Visit your local post office or USPS in person or online to request a freeze for up to 30 days.
